In this final scene Mortenson meets with a military man who offers him 2.2 million dollars to build schools. He thinks about how many schools he could build but then realizes that money from the U.S. military would not help him build schools because there no one would accept the schools of that type of money. The military guy then said "not a problem. We could make it look like a private donation from a businessman in Hong Kong." and then he tells Mortenson to go and think about it and call him when he decides to accept or not. Mortenson eventually decides to not accept the money because no one would ever want him to build a school paid for by the U.S. military.
I think that this scene is really important because it helps Greg put things into perspective. And reminds him of how fragile the CAI really is. If they actually screw this up they could be killed.
    Chapter 21, Jerry Anzures
In this chapter, Greg is back to Korphe, and the school is done. The first educated women in Korphe, was Jahan, the Braldu Valley, first women to be "educated.Shah, asked Greg if he was a journalist, and Greg said no, so he says that he builds school for girls, and help them with the education, that they need"Kevin Fedarko, a reporter doing research for an article on high-altitude warfare, goes with Mortenson to a meeting in Korphe. Jahan, Haji’s grand-daughter, interrupts the meeting to remind Mortenson about his promise to help her, and Mortenson gives her tuition money for medical school.

In this chapter, Greg goes back to the United States, to talk about, what is happening, in Pakistan & Afghanistan. Then the Representative Mary Bono, was really impressed, of what Greg has been doing, to help the people from Afghanistan. She was so impress of his work, that she got a group of other congressmen, to listen about what Greg has been doing to help others. But Mortenson feels his credibility in the region would be damaged if he were suspected of allying with the U.S. government. While Greg was in Pakistan, he was being interview, by a reporter who had gone with him to visit the afghan refugee schools, Greg asked Americans back home, that all of the Muslim were guilty of terrorism. He said, that the families in the refugee camps, weren't villains- they were victims. "these aren't the terrorist.

    Tea with the Taliban:
Mortenson and Suleman go to the Marriot Hotel to see the media "circus" they were there because of what happened on 9/11. He encounters Kathy Gannon a respected Associated Press bureau chief stationed in Pakistan, were they exchange opinions and whatnot. Gannon says to Greg that most of the reporters sending stories from the Hotel know very little about the region that is why the reporters try to gain insight through Mortenson, Greg tries to tell them good things of Pakistan but they rarely use that information in their stories. Mortenson notices that parts of the Taliban are spending a lot of time at the Marriot restaurant and joins them with cups of tea, they tell him that it might have been better to turn Osama Bin Ladin over to the Americans, but the powerful cleric Mullah Omar has forbidden it.
    QUESTIONS:
    19,1.
A Wahhabi madrassa is a type of religious school, where Muslim children are often taught extremist ideas. The Wahhabi sect is a sect of Islam that practices a more radical version of Islam, than normal The Wahhabi madrassas have directially supported terrorism according to the C.I.A.
    19,3.
According to the world bank 2 million people were educated in Wahhabi madrassas in 2001. This means that more likely than not in 2001 2 million people could have adopted extremist religious views or been convinced to carry out acts of religious war.
    19,5.
Greg does not think that all maddrassas are bad but he knows that some teach violent extremist views and others are a way for poor kids to get an education.
    19,7.
Greg was in Afghanistan on September 11, 2001 and he found out in the middle of the night.
    19,6.

In another scene on pg 120 the CAI had paid for three improvements; a water project, power plant and a dispensary (medicine could be given out), Greg and George McCown, along with georges' son dan, and dans' wife went to see what had been done, they have been greeted in a cheery, greatful manner, men gave hugs and women gave kisses, music was playing. They were like family. This showed the kindness of people in different cultures.
Onto another scene, when Greg returned to Korphe, Haji wasn't at the spot he'd always meet him, then he asked Hajis' son, he came to conclusion; Haji has died. This showed Gregs' compassion for this man, and the rest of these people.
Greg notices that many other schools are being built all around Afghanistan and even around his school. They are from Wahhabi sect which is notrois for their extremest Islamic views. This is just be for the terror attacks of 2001. The 9/11 commission later said that Al-Qaeda was primarily responsible for building and funding the schools and was a direct supporter of the Talabain.
I think that this was an important scene in the book because it explains why and how the schools were being built in Afghanistan. This also was important because the Wahhabi schools were drowning out his schools because they had much more money to spend. And the schools were later accused of directly supporting terrorism.
Greg is woken up in the middle of the night by his friend who tells him that the U.S. has been attacked. When he hears the news he immediately calls his C.I.A. friends and tells them to come to him. When they arrive in a helicopter they let him call his wife and tells her that he still has to finish his work before he can come home.
I think this is important because it shows that Greg is very coragais and won't back down. Greg has a lot of courage to stay in Afghanistan after 9/11 and I that shows what a remarkable person he is.

In the morning of an early September morning in 2001 Mortenson is on his way to Skardu, he notices that more madrassas are being built. The madrassas are free so many of the parents will send their boys there, but most of the schools are training them for militant purposes. Greg doesn't know about the bombings of the twin towers in New York city and the trageties that follow. On September 15, 2001 Greg travels to Korphe and he learns that Haji Ali has died, When Greg remembers his last visit with him he is very sad about it and promises to keep helping the children of Pakistan.

    Chapter 8
An important scene that happened in chapter eight is when Changazi has Mortenson's school supplies shifted to his other office. After that he wants Mortenson to build his village, Kuardu a school before winter. However Mortenson has other plans he wants to build a school in Korphe not Kuardu. After Changazi tells Mortenson this before a meal is served, Mortenson steps over the food and doesn't look at his elders all of this is unforgivably rude in their culture. In the end Mortenson's determination to go to Korphe and build a school there wins against Changazi's determination to build a school in Kuardu. This arguement however wasted a lot of time from building a school in Korphe(so he thinks until he finds out the people of Korphe have other plans), in other words it caused the building of the bridge(the people of Korphe when Mortenson was gone all agreed that they needed a bridge more than they needed a school at the moment, plus they needed a bridge in order to get the school supplies to Korphe and Mortenson ends up agreeing to this proposal) to be delayed until next summer. So Mortenson goes home feeling like a failure because he didn't get anything done that summer. -Iliana

his job. This scene is also important because it shows the other side of Greg, before we knew him as confident and so sure of what he was doing, and now he's starting to doubt himself.
Another important scene would have to be when he drove in a car for eight hours and was thinking he'd been too harsh, too angry, with Changazi and the other men who'd tried to scheme and plot to get the school he'd planning to build for Korphe. But Greg felt bad because he was a man without a home, without a car to drive and hardly any money in the bank. The problem was that everybody from the United States seemed rich to the Korphe people and he was nothing close to that.
The reason I think this scene is important is because all of the Korphe people expect Greg to have a lot of money, when he really doesn't at all so Greg has to find ways to raise money and finish the promise he set out to do.
It's also important because it shows how Korphe people look at Americans, they see them as rich and powerful, but truth is most of them aren't.
The third important scene from chapters 7 & 8 would have to be when Dr. Louis Reichardt, the first American to reach the summit of K2 called him. Reichardt call Greg for some advice and ask how he was. Greg told the whole story, from the 580 letters to the bridge that needed to be build, from losing his girlfriend to losing his job. Reichardt said to Greg that what he is trying to do now is way more difficult than climbing K2.Hearing Reichardt tell him that he was trying to do was tough, but not out of reach, it made Greg think that maybe he hadn't failed.
This scene is very important because if Reichardt never stayed in touch with Greg, he might of gave up and just stopped trying about everything. But it kept he's hopes alive and I think it gave Greg more motivation.

The next thing that I think is the most important is when his father got sick with cancer and it said that he went back home while being in college so he could spend time with him before he passed away. It says " Grag mad a six hour drive home to Minnesota every other weekend to spend time with his father carrying him outside so he could sit in a lawn chair in the sun." This shows that Greg cares the most about his family and that he would do anything for his family to make them happy and see them smile.
The third thing that I think is most important is when his father passed away and he decided to start climbing to make himself happy, he deserves the happiness after everything he has done. The book says, "He wanted to climb mountains. With just a few thousand dollars in his savings account, Greg packed up his car and headed out to California." Greg deserves to be doing what he enjoys after what he has gone through so far. Greg's sister passes away at the same time that he is climbing a mountain and falls 800 feet.

Chapter 3- "Progress and Perfection" and Chapter 4- Self Storage
One of the most important scenes in chapter 3 is when Greg asks to visit Korphe's school with Haji Ali. Instead, Greg is taken to an open ledge where eighty two children sit on the ground and draw in the dirt. He is told that Korphe has no school and that they can't afford to pay a teacher's salary of $1 a day so they share a teacher with a neighboring village and the kids are left alone while the teacher is away. Greg is so upset and surprised that the Pakistani government can't even provide a teacher for these people that he promises to build them a school.
