The people in this scene are Greg Mortenson and an elderly philanthropist named patsy Collins. She was a regular donor to the CAI and she said to Greg in a letter "these horrible hate letters are a mandate for you to get out and tell Americans what you know about Muslims. You represent the goodness and courage that America is all about. Get out, do not be afraid, and spread your message for peace. Make this your finest hour." when Mortenson got the letter he was in the middle east and took the advice very seriously.
I thought that this scene was important because it made Greg want to go to America and tell people about what is happening and why they should help. This lady lived through the era of WWII and i think that she knows a thing or two about this kind of thing.
In this scene Greg meets three boys while he is in Shamshatoo. He learned from the boys that their dad had been killed by an American missile and that the potatoes were from people who felt sympathy for them. He originally went over to the boys to ask them if they needed anything.
I figured that this was an important scene because he learned the devastation of the civilians when they lost family members was outrageous. This is, i think, one of the things that caused him to not accept the military's money in the next scene.
In this final scene Mortenson meets with a military man who offers him 2.2 million dollars to build schools. He thinks about how many schools he could build but then realizes that money from the U.S. military would not help him build schools because there no one would accept the schools of that type of money. The military guy then said "not a problem. We could make it look like a private donation from a businessman in Hong Kong." and then he tells Mortenson to go and think about it and call him when he decides to accept or not. Mortenson eventually decides to not accept the money because no one would ever want him to build a school paid for by the U.S. military.
I think that this scene is really important because it helps Greg put things into perspective. And reminds him of how fragile the CAI really is. If they actually screw this up they could be killed.

In this chapter, Greg is back to Korphe, and the school is done. The first educated women in Korphe, was Jahan, the Braldu Valley, first women to be "educated.Shah, asked Greg if he was a journalist, and Greg said no, so he says that he builds school for girls, and help them with the education, that they need"Kevin Fedarko, a reporter doing research for an article on high-altitude warfare, goes with Mortenson to a meeting in Korphe. Jahan, Haji’s grand-daughter, interrupts the meeting to remind Mortenson about his promise to help her, and Mortenson gives her tuition money for medical school.
