Chapter 15: Mortenson in Motion + Chapter 16: Red Velvet Box

1. Greg Mortenson was declared a fatwa, a religious ruling, upon him by the sher of the villagein the Braldu Valley, Chakpo. Greg discovered this at 3:00 in the morning at the Central Asia Institute's Bozeman office, which is a converted laundry room in the basement of his house. The sher declared this upon Greg because he doesn't like the idea of Greg educating girls. The sher bribes them, but they turn down the offer and they hire a powerful religious figure to stand with them against the fatwa. If the fatwa succeeds, then Greg will be forced to leave Pakistan.
I believe this is an important scene because if the fatwa did succeed, that would be the end of Greg's plan to build schools in Pakistan for the kids that need the education.
2. Greg asked Jennifer Wilson to create a board of directors for the Institute. Greg gets more supporters, one of them is a librarian, Julia Bergman, who will take on the task of selecting culturally appropriate books for the schools.
I believe this is an important scene because within the group of newly introduced supporters, one of them is a librarian. And with her help, she can pick out the culturally appropriate books for CAI schools, so now Greg won't need to worry about if one of the books would offend someone and he would get another fatwa ordered against him.
3. The arrival of a red velvet box contains a letter from the highest Shiite religious council. At first Greg thought the worst, but actually, the letter showed the support towards Greg. In turn, the fatwa became void.
I believe that this is an important scene because if he never got the letter from the Shiite council, the fatwa ordered against him by the sher would of passed, ending the project. But because he did receive it, the fatwa became void, allowing the project to continue.

Event No. 1: Korphe's school opens with celebration. This is the celebration of education for children in Korphe. Mortenson travels there with his wife and child, who is 8 months old. On the day of the inauguration, everybody took turns holding Amira, Mortenson's daughter. The school had recieved new wooden desks, thick carpets for feet, and books for a school library. Jean Hoerni's widow is at the new school handing out new school uniforms. There were speeches from Haji Ali, Hussein, and 2 teachers, but Mortenson did not give a speech. He was quote " Whole the speeches went on, Greg stood in the backround, against the wall, holding a baby somebody handed to him." After that, Tara and Amira went back home, but Greg stayed 2 more months. He was organizing a project in Baltistan to help train people in climbing, bring first aid, and rescue lost or injured people. Analysis: With Korphe opening, the celebration was quite grand. There were speeches, and everybody was so excited about their new clothes and materials and colorfully painted walls. This was all so new to them, of course they were very happy. Twaha's daughter named Jahan said quote "I couldn't take my eyes off all the foreign ladies, they seemed so dignified." Jean Hoerni's wife must of had a lot of fun handing out all of the new school uniforms. Even while all this was going on, Greg stood in the back holding a dirty baby, bouncing and playing with it. Maybe he thought that everybody should be happy and joyous instead of quietly listening to the speeches being given out. It was a celebration afterall.
Event No. 2: Shakeela and her advancement in education. Shakeela is into the pursuing of education and knowledge for women. Many people in the village said she would end up in the fields like all the other women. But her father still encouraged her to persist education. She finished Hushe, the nearby school, as top in her studies at school. She then went on to highschool, being the first girl to make it past elementary school. Analysis: Shakeela is becoming an iconic figure. Shakeela going on to learn in highschool is making her a very important role model. Not only is she the first female to go beyond elementary, she is the top student at the school, thus being even more smarter than males. She is really proving to be the figure needed in her village, region, and country. When she opens the doors to female education, many more females will join her in the pursuit of education.
Event No. 3: Greg Mortenson improves more than quality of education. Greg came to know Syed Abbas Risvi, who agrees that education is important, but quality of life is poor also and needs a helping hand for. He points out that clean water is very hard to get in the area and that people such as new borns were dying because of impure water being their only option for hydration. Greg agreed and the CAI decided to help, along with 4 other villages joining in to help. Eventually the problem became fixed quite soon and the area recieved pure water to aid the quality of life. Analysis: In this event Greg realizes that lives are more important when it comes down to it. This is realized in said quote "After all, a plant had to be watered before it can grow, and children have to survive long enough to go to school.". With Syed Abbas, Greg calls the attention of the village of Chunda in a plea for assistance in creating pipes and trenches He gathers hundreds of workers to to dig 10 hours per day manufacturing trenches and pipes to bring fresh water into the area, saving the lives of many children and babies.
